Baseball Superstitions: The Curse Of The Bambino

By: Sebastian Marders

Superstitious beliefs in professional sports have always intrigued players and fans alike. It has garnered wild thoughts and images of sorcery and voodoo idols in the locker rooms, and while some would scoff at the idea of superstition in sports, there are some stories that may prove its validity. In the world of Baseball, one famous superstition has plagued a team for 86 years, and for the Boston Red Sox, it is the Curse of the Bambino.

The Curse of the Bambino was a superstitious belief that has haunted the Boston Red Sox to be winless in the World Series for 86 years starting from 1918 and ending in 2004.

The famous curse is said to have started when the dominant Boston Red Sox sold their star Babe Ruth, also known as The Bambino, to the then winless New York Yankees. The Red Sox, prior to the sale, was a dominant team that won the first World Series in 1903 and then five more titles in the years before 1918.

After that historic transaction, the fortune of both teams changed forever, shining favor on the ever-losing New York Yankees and giving them good luck. The Yankees, upon the acquisition of Babe Ruth entered the era of their dominance in baseball. In the years that followed, they have reached the World Series 39 times and have won 26 world titles. They have won more than double the amount of any other team in baseball history.

On the other hand, The Boston Red Sox would eventually lose more of its star players to the Yankees. This marked the end of their dominance and the start of their quick descent into numerous years of losing seasons. They had only played in four World Series, losing all of them.

It was such a terrible time to be a die-hard Red Sox fan. The long losing streak of the team became so unbearable that some fans proclaimed the phenomenon to be the "curse of the bambino" in reference to the 1918 trade of Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees.

However, by 2004, the curse of the bambino and the fate of the Boston Red Sox was about to change. With good luck on their side, Boston was able to reach the American League Championship series to face their most famous rival, the dominant New York Yankees. During the championship series, Boston was down 0-3 having been outplayed by New York, and losing those first three games.

It was then in Game 4, when things completely turned around. The Red Sox beat the Yankees in the bottom of the 9th inning. The Sox caught up with the Yankees, tied the game within the last few innings, and would eventually win the game by the 12th inning. It was the start of a record-breaking moment in baseball history, as they are the first team to win a post-season series after losing the first three games.

The Red Sox eventually went on to the next round, facing another rival team, the St. Louis Cardinals. As luck would have it, the Red Sox won that series and ended their championship drought of 84 years, ultimately shattering the curse of the bambino.

In three years time, the Boston Red Sox would again win another championship, beating the Colorado Rockies in the World Series. That second championship win has sealed the belief that the curse is finally over.
