Although dry skin can be a frustration no matter where you have it, it's perhaps at its most annoying if it's on your face. Not only is it on view for everyone to see, but dry and itchy facial skin can also be some of the hardest to care for, for the very fact that it's open to the elements all the time. Thankfully, there are quite a few options available for you to help with your dry skin, but to make sure you know what one's the best for you, it's useful to know what causes dry facial skin in the first place. The Cause of Dry and Itchy Facial Skin The main cause any dry skin is a lack of moisture to the area. Just like a desert will become arid since there is no rain, your skin will also become hard and flaky, and this is where you get that itchy feeling on your face. Although sunshine will cause a lack of moisture, you're not safe in the winter months, as cold can be just as effective as heat in making your skin dry and itchy. Old age is another major cause of dry skin (and why many elderly people's faces are hard and leathery to the touch). Since the glands that create the moisture are working less effectively, it's harder for the skin to replenish itself, and another reason why older people often suffer from dry and itchy facial skin more than younger people. So what can be done about it? Treatments Since your face is lacking the required moisture it needs to keep the skin fresh and supple, you need to make sure that you are doing all you can to supplement any deficiency, and helping your body out where possible to keep your face soft. There are various lotions available to help in this, but even before applying lotion you can start to make a difference: * Proper cleansing. Just as it's recommended you drink water to keep your skin and complexion and its best, so you can also use water to make sure all your pores are clean and allowing a route for your natural body moisture to come through. By combining this with a facial cleanser that is suited to your skin, even just splashing your face with warm water at the start of the day then cleansing at night can make all the difference. * Exfoliate your face. Although this can work out fairly expensive, depending on the product used and how often you actually exfoliate (once a month is recommended), the difference it makes to dry and itchy facial skin is more than worth it. By using either a microdermabrasion kit, a chemical peel or retinoids (which not only cleans your pores like the others, but helps replace dead skin by replacing with healthy collagens), you'll see the difference and forget the cost. * Lotions and moisturizers. Unless you have acne (in which case moisturizers can actually cause further problems), this method can not only soothe the area on your face where the dry and itchy skin is, they can also help revitalize your looks and make you look younger again. Although dry, itchy facial skin can be more than just an annoyance and lead to ugly blotchy marks left by scratching at it, just a little foresight, coupled with the right aftercare for your particular skin, can soon leave you feeling happy and healthy again, and ready to face the world once more!
