How The Sounds Of Nature Can Put Baby To Sleep

By: Jonathan Hook

The effects of sound on us are beyond any debate. While passing on a busy road, the honking of horns and the screeching of tires, make us irritated while at other times, by listening to some soothing music, our spirit gets elevated. Soothing sound has a therapeutic effect on us. It helps in alleviating stress and depression. Our meditation session gets more enriching and productive when the soothing sound is being played in the background.

Man like all animals is also a product of nature. Hence, the sounds of nature like the ocean wave, falling rain and topical forest have unique enchanting effect on us. When used before going to bed, it helps us to unwind and eventually we drift into a sound sleep. In this respect, the babies are no different.

The sounds of nature also have a great influence on the babies. In fact, the babies have a connection with the sound of nature before birth. The low rhythmic sound that they hear when they are still in the womb is, in fact, the first sound of nature they come across and it gets imprinted in their consciousness. So, they get relaxed when they come across such sounds around them. The sounds also act a signal or an impulse for the child to relax and sleep. For this, it is always advisable to use the sounds of nature around them. It also acts as a shield for the babies against other inevitable sounds in the room like the blaring of radio and television or the conversations of people etc.

The music that are continuous, repetitive and less complex, are most suitable for the babies. For this reason, the sounds of nature are the most suitable form of music for the babies. The music that is soothing to adults is also soothing to the babies. Hence, before selecting any music for your baby, listen it first and then try to make an objective analysis as to whether it relaxes you. If indeed, you feel relaxed, then you may go for it.

It is always a smart idea to use the sounds of nature as a signal for the baby to sleep. Use it regularly before he goes to sleep, so that he will start associating it with sleep. Even if he wakes up in the middle of the night and starts crying , try to calm him by playing the sounds of nature slowly so that he will again go back to sleep. While traveling also, you can take the CDs of the sounds of nature with you and use them to good effect. When the baby fully identifies this music with sleep, then other sounds from the car, train or plane while traveling, would not distract him and he can easily be put to sleep.

The growth of every child, they say, is an experiment in life. Similarly, using the sounds of nature to put your baby to sleep is one such experiment that would always pay rich dividends, as regards to the baby's and also your health.
