Imagine Yourself Feeling Complete Confidence

By: Alan B. Densky, CH

Self-confidence is often defined as the power to trust oneself and one's abilities. This attribute is integral to one's accomplishments throughout one's lifetime. This strength helps persons to believe that they are worthwhile and that they can be successful in their undertakings. Even those who do not possess this attribute can begin to increase their self confidence.

Without self-confidence, many people become powerless to achieve life goals. They tend to be ineffective in interpersonal interactions, educational attempts, and job situations. They frequently acquire a social phobia, and tend to be uncomfortable in social situations. Persons who do not possess self-confidence sometimes hesitate to attempt to set or work toward goal achievement; these people firmly believe that they are likely to disappoint. They are convinced that they are not as good or as capable as those around them. They typically do fall short because they do not believe in themselves.

Contrastingly, the person who is able to gain self confidence will find himself or herself able to change this cycle of despair and achieve healing from this social phobia. This person then learns that improving self confidence results in remarkable improvements in relationships and academic achievements. At times, a job promotion may occur because of actions taken to boost self-confidence.

People might not develop self-confidence for several reasons. They might have had overbearing parents, or been teased frequently during their school years. Some struggled academically or socially. Others simply did not have success at making friends or know the positive support of classmates, parents, or teachers. Many of these persons fight against a self-image of inadequacy and uselessness.

Too often, people who were unable to gain self confidence as children are unable to do this throughout adulthood. They have been unable to learn how to effect this, and usually learn only when they seek the aid and support of friends or professional counselors. Too many people are ashamed to admit that they are hindered by such difficulties, and instead continue to struggle along all their lives.

A number of strategies are sometimes utilized to help persons to gain self confidence. Many styles of counseling therapies, such as cognitive therapy or group treatments, can be employed to teach individuals how to improve self confidence. Endless numbers of self-help guides have been developed to help clients to improve self-confidence. Therapists even provide seminars and retreats developed to help others improve self confidence.

Although all of these strategies are sometimes useful, two alternative strategies that can be quickly learned and incredibly effective for most of individuals who try them are confidence hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic Programming or NLP. Experts who use confidence hypnosis are typically successful in coaching individuals to acquire self confidence and greatly improve both their perspectives and their abilities to achieve in life.

Classic hypnosis (using post-hypnotic suggestions) is often very effective. This approach is most useful for people who are suggestible and easily directed. This type of therapy frequently is not useful with individuals who tend to be analytical or are critical thinkers.

Individuals who fit the latter group, Ericksonian hypnosis or NLP techniques work much better. These tools are great for effectively communicating with the subconscious, which is the seat of our thoughts and feelings. This happens because the resistance typically offered by analytical persons to suggestiveness is bypassed.

One of the NLP techniques that people are frequently taught to build self confidence is known as anchoring. Anchoring is a normal experience. For instance, if you hear an old song, and have feelings of deja vu, it's because your unconscious related the feelings in a past situation, with the music that you were listening to at the time. So now when you hear the music again, the unconscious triggers the emotions related to it. So the song anchors those sensations.

Using the technique known as anchoring, people are regressed to a memory that made them feel the emotions of confidence. As they remember and relive those feelings, they are taught to touch two fingers together. The unconscious then connects the recollections of self-confidence with this behavior. If the person argues that they have no memory of an emotion of self-confidence, the person can develop an imaginary event where he or she does see himself being confident, and then anchor that instance of confidence.

Once they've anchored the feelings of confidence, in those situations that require self-confidence, anchoring triggers the feelings of confidence for use in the present situation.

An alternative NLP technique known as the "Flash" can be used to instantaneously substitute painful feelings, which are frequently related to a lack of self-confidence. Because of this method, the mind diverts the visual images that create negative emotions, to trigger mental pictures to create a positive feeling.

For example, the client programs the unconscious to use the visual images that cause emotions of uncertainty, as triggers for visual images that trigger emotions of self confidence. Our mental images trigger our emotions.

We all have goals, and aspirations. A number of people can strive toward these to accomplish their desires. Sometimes, however, people permit their low self-confidence to conquer them. Despite the fact that NLP may not work for every person, the large majority of individuals who attempt this strategy speak of great success in boosting self confidence. This approach is usually much more successful than other techniques for most people.

Summary: Persons who lack self-confidence typically find it difficult to succeed in many aspects of life. A number of factors cause people to acquire social phobias or the feeling of incompetence. Several treatment approaches can aid individuals to build self-confidence. NLP is well-known to be highly beneficial by a large number of clients who have adopted this strategy.
