Welcome to my first post on Hypnosis 101 – The Basics.
Hypnosis is intriguing to everyone. Many people would like to take advantage of its power to transform themselves into a happier, healthier person. But because of the many misconceptions about hypnosis, many shy away from taking advantage of this wonderful modality.Hypnosis was accepted by the AMA in 1958 as an effective method for treating stress, and stress related symptoms. But does it really work, and what should a person look for when seeking a therapist, or purchasing hypnosis tapes & CDs?By reading this series of posts, you will learn exactly what hypnosis is, and what it is not. If you intend to use hypnosis to help you overcome tension, lose weight, quit smoking, or eliminate a bad habit, you will also learn what you can expect, and that you have nothing to fear. Later on in the course I’ll even teach you a simple hypnotic induction that you can use on yourself, or a friend! So since this is Basic Hypnosis 101, lets start at the very beginning. When you went to school, you were taught lessons in a progressive manner. Each new lesson was based on your having mastered the previous lesson.
Similarly, with this series of posts, I’ll present my information to you in small, bite-sized chunks so that it is easy to digest. I’ll create a new post every Saturday. After you have finished this mini-course in Basic Hypnosis 101, you will know everything that you need to know so that you can make an educated decision as to whether or not hypnosis is for you.
Don’t worry, there won’t be a test on what you’ve learned, so you can relax and just have fun with this.
If you have any questions at all either during the course, or after it is finished, please feel free to send me your questions by email. Or call me at 800-617-2004 and I will be happy to chat with you and answer your questions.
THE DEFINITION OF HYPNOSIS
Hypnosis is a state of hyper-suggestibility where the conscious and subconscious (unconscious) minds dissociate. It is a state of mind where the subject is more likely to accept the operator’s suggestions. You have been in hypnosis many times without even realizing it. If you have ever watched a sad T.V. show and reacted with a tear in your eye, you have been hypnotized by the television. You entered a state of increased suggestibility where you uncritically accepted the suggestion of sadness on the TV screen and reacted with a sad emotion, your tear. In other words your reasoning ability, which is contained in your conscious mind, was bypassed. You did not reason that the show was just a play; you accepted the action as being real. So you reacted with real emotion.
WHO CAN BE HYPNOTIZED?
It has been found that all normal people are hypnotizable to a greater or lesser extent. People with less than a 70 I.Q., those of the moron level or lower, generally are not hypnotizable. People who are in an active state of psychosis generally are not
hypnotizable. Most senile people are difficult or impossible to hypnotize. I have found in my own private practice dealing with a large number of retired people as old as 85 years of age, that hypnosis is a potent and beneficial method for most people. The person’s motivation is the key to success. That’s it for Chapter 1. In the next post we’ll discuss whether you need to be a “deep” hypnotic subject to gain benefits, the dangers of hypnosis, and some of the misconceptions about hypnosis.
Many people have asked me what the most popular uses of hypnosis for self-improvement are. I would say that the most popular use is for appetite control in order to facilitate a weight loss.
And the second most popular use is to help you quit smoking. For more information, visit my website and
Neuro-VISION® offers two different, but complimentary programs to help you lose weight, so you can look good, and feel great. Lose Weight In A Flash! is my Video Hypnosis Technology. It was awarded a US Patent because of its uniqueness and effectiveness. And Vaporize Your Appetite! is my audio Ericksonian Hypnosis & NLP program.
HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT: Lay back, close your eyes and listen carefully. For the first minute or allow yourself to become aware of every single external sound that you can hear. Then shift to listening to your breathing. After you have been
listening to your breathing for a minute or two, see how many other sounds you can hear within your body: heart beat, etc.Take about ten minutes to do this little exercise once or twice per day and you will be amazed how much more relaxed you feel.
