Hypnosis 101 – The Basics Chapter 3

In the last post we discussed some of the misconceptions about hypnosis. I also stated that hypnosis is 100% natural and safe. All normal people are hypnotizable. Today I’ll pick up where I left off by debunking more of the misconceptions about
hypnosis.CAN THE HYPNOTIST CONTROL ME? NO! The hypnotist cannot make you do anything against your will.CAN THE HYPNOTIST MAKE ME DIVULGE MY SECRETS?
You will not divulge any secrets while in hypnosis unless you want to do so. The hypnotist does not have any control over the subject. Quite the contrary, the subject has more control over herself since at this time she has control over her own subconscious mind. The subject can easily reject any suggestion.MUST PEOPLE TELL THE TRUTH WHEN IN HYPNOSIS?
NO! People can lie when in hypnosis.DO HYPNOTISTS HAVE SPECIAL POWERS AND VIBRATIONS?
The hypnotist does not have any special powers. Actually, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis.

WHY DO PEOPLE FAIL TO REACH THEIR GOALS?
It is very true that certain forms of hypnosis in the hands of a skilled therapist can seem to do magic, and quickly, I might add. But it’s amazing to me how many people think that one quick session with a hypnotist will erase a lifetime of negative behavioral patterns. It takes a reasonable amount of time and commitment to change yourself. You must be realistic in your expectations.

One of the biggest reasons for the inability to reach one’s goals through hypnosis is an inadequate amount of practice where self-hypnosis is concerned. Self-hypnosis should be an ongoing daily affair. Ultimately, YOUR SUCCESS IS UP TO YOU!

That’s all we have time for today. In the next post I’ll compare visiting a hypnotist in his office with purchasing a recorded program. Which is better? Stay tuned!

Many people have asked me what the most popular uses of hypnosis for self-improvement are. I would say that the most popular use is for appetite control in order to facilitate a weight loss.

And the second most popular use is to help people quit smoking. I offer two different programs to make it easy to quit smoking.

Quit Smoking In A Flash!  is my Neuro-VISION Video hypnosis title.

I Quit Smoking! is my audio Ericksonian Hypnosis & NLP title.

  • Alan, so all this stuff we see on TV is just hocus? When the patient goes into a trance and does all this stuff while under hypnosis and then after waking up they don’t remember anything. This is all an acting job? Wow…I thought some of that had to be true….Regards, Jared Blake

  • Hi Jared,

It is possible to do things when in the state of hypnosis, and then forget that you did them, as spontaneous amnesia can be a part of hypnosis, just like it is a part of everyday life.

Example: You meet someone, they introduce themselves to you, and you forget their name almost as quickly as they told it to you. The important part is that you heard it and knew you were hearing it as you heard it.

Similarly, when in the state of deep hypnosis, you know what you are hearing as you hear it, and you know what you are doing, as you do it, and you are aware of your decisions as you make them. But you can forget them just as quickly – in some instances.

But just because you can forget things, doesn’t mean that you are going to do things that are objectionable to you!

  • Alan, is there a self hypnotic state achieved with Yoga?

    Thanks in advance,

    Dam

  • Hi Dam,

Yes, there is a self-hypnotic state achieved with Yoga. It’s called the Alpha state and it can be achieved in many ways.

  • Thanks for the interesting article. Are your conclusions about doing things against your will when in a hypnotic state based on observation or theory? It is hard to see how one can be so sure of this? First, since everyone is a bit different, it seems a bit presumptuous to assume that any conclusions about such things must automatically apply to all situations and people. Secondly, considering the complexity of the human mind, I would think it would be difficult to know what doing something “against your will” even means.

  • Hi Rick,

My conclusions are based on 30 years of my own experience, and probably a million years of experience gained by other hypnotists and hypnotherapists. You can’t make people to do things that they wouldn’t normally do using hypnosis.

We have an observing Ego state, and regardless of whether we are in Beta (the normal waking state) Alpha or Theta, it won’t allow us to be talked into doing something that is offensive to us.

That being said, you can coerce people into doing something against their will in the normal waking state by threats of violence against them or their loved ones. But that is NOT hypnosis!

  • Hypnosis these days have become very popular and lots and lots of people are going to hypnotist for various reasons. But is is possible to remember the questions after a person is hypnotized.

  • Yes, in most cases you will remember without having to take any action at all. And in all cases, if you tell yourself to remember what was said while you were in the hypnotic state, you will remember.
