When Words Hurt: Dealing with Facial Tics

“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” We’ve heard that saying since we were children, and many of us have stood on the school playground with our hands clenched, saying this old rhyme back to classmates who were taunting us. The problem is, and we all know it, words really do hurt. It’s bad enough as an adult to have to cope with painful issues, but children are intensely affected by cruel words that cut. For children with a problem such as a stutter or facial tic, these words cut like a knife.

If you know someone who has a problem with facial tics or grunting, they may have tried several different medicines prescribed by doctors. They may have tried counseling or group therapy sessions, or behavioral reward programs, but nothing really seems to work effectively. The facial spasm or throat clearing or nervous twitch stays, and it gets worse whenever the afflicted person becomes stressed or anxious.

If you dealt with this problem as a child, and were fortunate enough to outgrow it, you know how painful this condition can be. Most children do outgrow facial tics eventually, but they are left with emotional scars and shyness that may never heal. They may develop other kinds of social anxieties or phobias, or even avoid dealing with social situations altogether.

If you or your child is suffering from this problem, or if you know someone who does, there is hope. Best of all, this hope isn’t horribly expensive, and it isn’t any further away than your own home – if you choose. A carefully designed alternative to expensive group or medication therapy has been developed that shows a considerable amount of success in helping even small children as young as 7 overcome facial tics.

This method, called Neuro-Linguistic Programming, (NLP) can quickly program even a young child to relax. And with NLP techniques, children and adults are able to radically reduce and even eliminate anxiety, stress, and facial tics. These programs are available as CDs, and can be used in the comfort of one’s own home.
