Is Depression Breaking Your Heart?

If you struggle with congestive heart failure, you aren’t alone. More than five million people in the United States struggle with this health problem.

Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a condition in which the heart muscle becomes weakened. Because this muscle, which pumps blood throughout the body, is weaker, blood circulates less effectively. People become tired, unable to enjoy the same activities and exercises as they were able to experience before developing heart failure. They sometimes become short of breath, and even walking from the house to the car can become a struggle.

When people with CHF become more short of breath, they become more anxious. This begins a self-perpetuating vicious cycle of shortness of breath and anxiety. Breaking this cycle is difficult, and may even seem to be impossible.

Often, people who are diagnosed with CHF become disabled and cannot work any longer. They are more dependent on family members or friends, and they just can’t do everything that they used to. This can lead to frustration, depression, and anxiety.

Studies have shown that people who become depressed and feel powerless as a result of developing congestive heart failure live shorter lives than people who continue to feel that they are able to maintain at least some control over their situation. People who are able to make choices about their health and their treatment often live longer than those who do not feel as though they have choices.

Sometimes, it’s hard to see that a person who is ill does have choices about how to best manage their health problem and to stay healthy. Learning to help that person see this helps him or her to live longer and remain healthier. Helping this process to occur can be difficult, and often requires the assistance of an expert.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) offers options that help persons suffering from a health problem like this to learn to help themselves. This unique new method is often used by specially trained experts to teach clients who experience anxiety and depression to relax and achieve control over these emotions. Eventually, people who use these methods find it almost impossible to become depressed or anxious.

This method is also helpful for people who don’t have the money to visit a therapist each week. They can purchase tapes or CDs of NLP sessions that they can use to start the healing process at home.  They can learn to heal and maintain control without breaking their hearts – or the bank!
