It is important that you keep your mouth healthy and your breath smelling good to maintain pleasant relationship with everybody around you.
Here are the top three (3) things to do to avoid gum disease:
1. Brush your teeth and your tongue. Brushing isn’t enough if you want to avoid gum disease for tongue is like a sponge or a carpet that can hold microscopic food particles. The little finger-like structures on the surface of the tongue make a perfect home for bad bacterial growth. However this can be controlled through cleaning your gums in between your teeth, tongue and the roof of your mouth. Do not brush your teeth too hard as it can lead to receding gums. Always keep a light touch when brushing your teeth. You must use a soft toothbrush and do this at least for 2 minutes.
2. Floss your teeth. You have to keep the tiny bits of food particles out from between your teeth where it can accumulate. Brushing alone isn’t enough in eradicating this debris, that is why you must floss. As this food particles sits between your teeth, it could feeds the bad bacteria that have gathered in there. Bacteria excrete harmful acids as waste and these acids dissolve the holes in the teeth, thus it can become cavities and they can irritate your gums. Acid irritation can cause swollen gums wherein it turns red, feels sensitive and bleeds easily during brushing and even flossing. Swollen gums are signs of gum infection so it is ideal to consult your dentist for advice and get a thorough cleansing.
3. Use a good mouthwash – Rinse after flossing. Rinsing does not only remove the debris that you extricate when you flossed. It will chemically kill many of the germs in your mouth. Rinsing for at least 30 seconds will allow the mouthwash to reach the spaces between your teeth and wash the bacteria away. A good mouthwash can even kill many of the bacteria that live in your tongue.
