Chewing Tobacco – Mastering Your Impulses

In recent years, baseball stars and other popular figures have come forward, sharing their illness and their photos with the entire world. They’re doing this in a desperate attempt to rescue younger people from a disease that has claimed their health, and, in some cases, their very lives. These photos remind people of the horrors of oral cancer and the surgical alternatives to death, trying to send the message that chewing tobacco isn’t cool – and can be fatal.

Why don’t the younger people listen to the heroes of previous years? Aren’t the stories painful enough, or vivid enough, to spark their imaginations and help them to see the consequences of chewing tobacco? In many cases, people continue to use “chew” or “dip,” unwilling or unable to rescue themselves from the potential fate that awaits them as well.

The addiction is so strong, and the consequences seem so distant and far away, that people continue this potentially deadly habit. Even when white spots appear in their mouths, warning them of a dangerous pre-cancerous sore, many continue to use chewing tobacco. Are they just not ready to quit – or can’t they keep themselves from going back to it, over and over?

Sadly, many people have tried to quit, and are unable to succeed in the quit tobacco programs that are currently available. Less than 1/3 of the people who participate in these programs are successful for more than six months after quitting. Is there any hope at all?

Luckily for these people, a newer, more revolutionary method of quitting tobacco has appeared on the scene. This method uses techniques that are simple to learn and use. Neuro-Linguistic Programming is an effective new therapy that helps people to program their unconscious mind to automatically substitute more desirable behaviors in place of this deadly habit.

Almost without thinking, people are able to quit chewing tobacco. The success rates are startling – about 70% of the people who use this program are successful in the long term. It’s enough to make you wonder why everyone who chews tobacco doesn’t use it.

Make Quitting Chewing Tobacco Much Easier

When you started, it looked really cool. Many of the Major League Baseball players were doing it, and when some older friends offered you a bit, you felt really mature. You probably didn’t have any idea how hard it was going to be to stop chewing tobacco – or how deadly this substance was going to be. Now you know, and it’s too late. Or is it?

Studies have shown that a person’s greatest risk of developing mouth and throat cancers is a result of chewing tobacco (also referred to as dip, snuff, or chew) occurred during the years the individual was using it. Once you have used chewing tobacco, you will never again have the same risk of developing throat cancer as someone who has never used it, but your risk will drop sharply after quitting.

Quitting tobacco, however, is hard. Certain aspects of the nicotine cause a person’s cells to become physically dependent on the nicotine. This makes it almost impossible to quit, and without a successful quit program, people risk relapsing for many years after their initial quit date.

Most tobacco cessation products focus on this aspect of addiction, the physical component of the habit. Unfortunately, however, this accounts for only about 10 percent of the reason that people return to tobacco after kicking the habit. The remaining 90 percent of the habit involves unconscious reasons, which make it difficult to stop chewing tobacco or quit smoking.

Some of these reasons include unconscious associations between nicotine and pleasurable activities, or as a means of stress reduction. Hypnotherapists and NLP practitioners use approaches designed to help people overcome the unconscious component of their addiction, resulting in a much more successful outcome.

In fact, people who use hypnotherapy and NLP to quit chewing tobacco are far more likely to experience success than people who use nicotine replacement or behavioral therapies. If your life depends on your ability to kick the habit, why not choose the most successful methods of quitting.
