Congestive heart failure, or CHF, is among the most commonly found chronic diseases in the United States. Almost five million individuals live with this disease, and 500,000 more develop CHF every year. This illness may be slightly problematic, or it may become disabling and interfere with daily living.
Persons with CHF undergo many deviations from their usual daily routines. They have to take drugs to decrease water buildup and to decrease the work performed by their heart muscle. Many of these result in depression and fatigue. These drugs may also impair physical intimacy with a life partner.
One other problem that persons with this condition face is the need for significant diet adjustments. Many have to quit eating red meat, stay away from meals with a lot of fats or sodium, or limit the quantity of liquids they consume every day. They are encouraged to lose weight and work to stay as healthy as they can.
Unfortunately, however, people with congestive heart failure no longer possess as much physical endurance as before. Instead, they have to stand by as friends and family members play volleyball, run, or work out. This causes isolation and inadequacy. Moreover, many patients grieve their loss of physical strength and energy.
The majority of individuals who encounter this and are not yet of retirement age must also quit working. As well as creating financial stress and depression, this can increase emotions of isolation and seclusion. They are completely alone. Rather than of bantering with the person at the neighboring workspace, they watch TV while their friends continue their live.
At times, patients take anti-depressant or anti-anxiety drugs to manage these losses. Alternatively, people may opt for psychotherapy or group therapy to help them with fulfilling belongingness needs and working through the mourning created by their freshly restricted lifestyles.
A better method of coping with this type of depression, however, has gained recent attention and gained practically immediate approval with individuals who have tried it. Furthermore, unlike drugs or psychotherapy, this technique is quite inexpensive. People are able to learn its use without experiencing further financial hardship.
This approach, which uses a combination of Ericksonian hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), helps clients to begin to relax and find harmony and tranquility in their daily lives. These therapies help clients to accept the new limitations in their lives while instructing them to go on living life as completely as possible. Even depression that occurs because of medication can be easily lessened through the proper application of the methods available through hypnosis and NLP. Two of these techniques are anchoring and the Flash.
Ericksonian Hypnotherapy is often referred to as conversational hypnosis. It includes methods for providing post-hypnotic suggestions rooted in a conversation or figure of speech. The positive aspect of this technique is that it eliminates the resistance to directly suggested actions that is almost always encountered when using more traditional styles of hypnotherapy.
With anchoring, hypnotists and NLP Practitioners teach clients to focus on happy thoughts and memories in which they felt relaxed and capable. As the client becomes immersed in these memories, they are able to re-experience those positive feelings. The individual then learns to make a concrete anchor for these emotions by touching two fingers together. The subconscious mind creates a connection between the actual touch of these two fingers, and the positive emotions. Afterward, upon encountering a stressful or depressing situation, an anchor is elicited through touching together the two fingers, re-creating emotions of peace and tranquility.
The Flash technique is also quite helpful to individuals who are trying to overcome depression. The Flash technique programs the brain to instantaneously utilize those negative thoughts that are creating stress and depression, as triggers for positive thoughts that stimulate relaxation and tranquility. Over time, clients soon find themselves almost unable to have negative thoughts!
Summary: Persons with congestive heart failure typically encounter depression because of grieving the decline of their physical health and well-being. Other components that can contribute to depression include medications and money worries. Both Ericksonian Hypnotherapy and NLP provide excellent strategies for assisting clients to cope with depression without being forced to put forth huge amounts of time and money.
