Several surveys indicate that most adults feel that they are under a lot of stress. Authorities in the field estimate that between 75 and 90 percent of all visits to PCPs (Primary Care Physicians) are for stress related problems. More than ever, research is confirming the primary role played by stress in triggering or aggravating several physical and emotional disorders. A headline from a 1983 Time Magazine labeled stress “The Epidemic of the Eighties.” The article also declared that stress is our critical health problem. And one has to acknowledge that today’s world has become a lot more complicated and stressful in the last twenty-five years since that article was written.
Several surveys indicate that most adults feel that they are under a lot of stress. Authorities in the field estimate that between 75 and 90 percent of all visits to PCPs (Primary Care Physicians) are for stress related problems.
Most people say their stress is primarily due to their job. The levels of stress have also increased in children and the senior population for reasons including: Peer pressures that often lead to everything from cigarette smoking to alcoholism and drug abuse; the dissolution of religion and family values; increased crime rates; fear for personal security; as well as social isolation and loneliness.
Stress can cause and aggravate problems such as diabetes, ulcers, low back and neck pain, hypertension, strokes and heart attacks. This is because of the increased sympathetic nervous system activity as well as a high level of cortisol, adrenaline, and other hormones. Chronic stress has been associated with lower immune system resistance. Stress can contribute to anxiety, depression, and its different impacts on one’s organs.
“Stress” is defined as follows by the American Heritage Dictionary:
“To subject to physical or mental pressure, tension, or strain”
It defines “tension” as follows:
“Mental, emotional, or nervous strain”
The following is the definition of “anxiety”:
“A state of uneasiness and apprehension, as about future uncertainties”
And the following is the definition of “depression”:
“The condition of feeling sad or despondent”
It defines “clinical depression” as follows:
“A psychiatric disorder characterized by an inability to concentrate, insomnia, loss of appetite, anhedonia, feelings of extreme sadness, guilt, helplessness and hopelessness, and thoughts of death.”
What we can be sure of is that our mind is the first reason for our feelings of stress, anxiety and depression. To put it into different words, what we think about, and our attitudes and the way we view our experiences strongly influence our feelings. That way, if we can learn how to alter our thoughts, attitudes, and points of view, we can eliminate our stress, anxiety, and depression and attain a better state of being.
Since the beginning of time, people have looked for methods that would allow them to dissipate stress. With the pharmaceutical industry there seems to be a pill for everything. And to that end the industry has designed a wide array of tranquilizers from Valium to Xanax. If you choose to utilize these pills for relief, please make sure that you are aware of the side-effects by reading the fine print, which usually are, among others, addiction and dependency. Unfortunately, these kinds of drugs aim at curing the symptoms, but not the cause. So when one stops ingesting them, the symptoms can return.
A smarter method to eliminate tension, stress, anxiety, and depression is to try to cure its actual cause, which as I said before, is most often our thought processes. Now, here is some good news. The very essence of hypnosis is relaxing. The AMA accepted hypnosis in 1958 as an effective method of treating stress or stress related symptoms. But unlike pills, there are totally no undesirable side effects.
Hypnosis is the Alpha level of consciousness. It is the daydream like temporary psychological state that we experience as we’re about to fall asleep in the evening. And we experience it once again as we wake up in the morning. There are a lot of different ways we can guide ourselves into this condition of tranquility, from step-by-step relaxation to visual imagery to listening to hypnosis CD’s.
Once we enter a hypnotic state, we can interact with our unconscious mind, which is the seat of our feelings. And it becomes easier to admit new ideas and points of view, which can help us to dissipate anxiety, or even avoid it completely.
NLP, which is a new type of hypnotherapy, offers a lot of excellent methods for releasing stress. Maybe the technique that works best is called the “swish” pattern – or the “flash” pattern. When you use the “swish” pattern, your unconscious will automatically use negative, stress triggering mental pictures, as triggers for tranquilizing mental pictures. In other words, your stressors will now cause relaxation!
TO SUM THINGS UP
Our thoughts can trigger depression, anxiety and tension. So by changing our attitude and the way we perceive our situation and what we’ve experienced, we can dissipate these feelings at the root. Hypnosis and NLP are natural tools that make it possible to change our attitude and point of view to swiftly dissipate the main cause of our negative feelings.
